Week of October 19-23: Midterm Reviews
Please schedule your midterm reviews for this week, and pair up with another studio to exchange progress. Typically the whole week is used for reviews - one studio on Tuesday and the other on Friday. The pairing up can cross campuses as well. When you have paired up let us know with a quick email.
Saturday, November 14: MOMA-Bauhaus exhibition visit
Our idea for a group event is a visit to the Bauhaus exhibition that is coming to MOMA. Having just seen it in Berlin I can tell you it is worth a visit. While the precise event is still in the works, we will be able to send in the students in groups of 25.
Friday December 11: Walk-Thru, 2009 Version.
For those of you unfamiliar with the thesis walk-thru, it is a meeting between all thesis faculty to look at the work from both campuses produced in the Design 7 studios. It is simultaneously 1) a way to collect work for accreditation 2) a way to exchange teaching methodolgies 3) an opportunity to discuss particular student projects that might be unsatisfactory in the eyes of the studio critic. Each student is responsible to produce a 30x40 board describing their project (both digital and hardcopy); these will be collected and retained for accreditation.
Nader and I would like the walk-thru to work hand in hand with the book that is to be submitted at the end of the semester. (The parameters for this document will be outlined in a separate email). At the walk-thru, each professor will use the boards to explain their studio methodology, but not each project in particular. A studio critic may voice concern over a particular student's work, but this is only for us to make note of for further review and feedback. Detailed scrutiny and feedback of both particular projects and studio methodology - which is the real advantage of having all of us look at each student's work - can only occur over the break while looking at the books, after understanding the studio methodology.
Monday / Tuesday December 14-15: Design 7 Final Juries
Monday in Manhattan, Tuesday in Old Westbury. Rooms will be assigned. If you intend to change your date you must alert us of this immediately.
thanks and see you soon,
Matt and Nader
