Louis Kahn Study Model

"This model was constructed using plans and sections of Luis Kahn's Exeter Library. Small blocks represent small group spaces, large blocks large group spaces, and the narrow long blocks represent the individual. The individual in this structure is dominant, and is modeled in a way that holds together the entire model. The blocks themselves represent the layers of current knowledge which can be gathered from reading the thousands of books collected in the library. The baltic bass wood blocks help illustrate this point with layers of wood running in opposite directions. The small groups and large groups are oriented vertical for it is in these areas where a vertical articulation of knowledge occurs, progressing the student to a level beyond physical structure."- evanandhall.com

  1. While I find this model evocative, I don’t see the relation, aside from a very esoteric shape experiment, to the Exeter Library. Replace “blocks” with “voids” and the words could apply to the “vomit” image as well.

It is a well crafted model. This I can appreciate in itself.

  2. This is an amazing model, however i do see a close relation to Exeter. It has that Helical feeling to it, which exeter clearly does. Program all evolving from the central Spine of Space. I would say this model basically puts ALL importance on the center (the void) despite all of the distractions....the blocks being around it. Id say he used the mixed up confusing blocks to show the pandamonia of program around his elegant highly important central space.
