Sketches and Thoughts - Gestalt Theory and De Stijl

When I started to lay out my sketches and ideas for program - I started to realize that some of the "spaces" reminded me of of the De Stijl paintings. I began to think about the overlapping spaces would create.
Another thing I started to research was my interest in the Gestalt Psychology. With this I discover that the meaning of the Gestalt theory is that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I thought this was unique because in Holistic medicine it is defined as being that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
I would like to use the Gestault Concept when laying out the program because I believe that together all the program together would produce something greater than just pieces of it.
For instance, Option A, program would be used in the circles and a courtyard would be used in the center. Our mind is connecting a triangle, when a triangle has not been drawn - hence the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Updated Thesis Statement

Thesis Statement:

Composite Community Wellness Center

Throughout time, society has come across issues of poverty and crime. Some efforts have been made to correct the minds of the unfortunate however no valid attempts have been made to revitalize them into a positive aspect of our community. Persons to be accepted within the program regimen are homeless, substance abusers, recently released inmates, and the mentally unstable. The proposed goal is to detain, and rehabilitate into society through a means of education and integration. The facility will incorporate a means of community as a therapeutic device as a more holistic approach to rehabilitation. Through the use of existing conditions both in building structure and existing structure of lives to be corrected, an architectural statement will create a blur of the physical and metaphysical aspects of space and human interaction within those spaces. In order to create this “ blur “ of conditions old and new a number of provisions will be made to accommodate community interaction such as educational facilities, housing, and administrative help including healthcare, and social services. The aim of such an institution is to give those less fortunate the means to re-learn many things that members of community take for granted. In order to benefit its users, the building will be comprised of 3 major components. These components, Medical, Educational, and Social will have 3 essential stages ranging from intensive treatment, to therapeutic treatment, and finally rehabilitation. Major program elements are to include a welcoming center, medical/research facility, a school, community gallery and a distribution area where newcomers will be evaluated and placed in the most beneficial stage to suit their needs. The campus program elements will both react to the occupants of the space as well as the existing structure of the Renwick Smallpox Hospital seamlessly to create a healthy, successful environment for both the community as well as the clients.

Jenn- Connection model continued

Review

I’m sure everyone is intending to do this anyway, but I just wanted to reiterate that everyone should take notes and make sketches for each other – including for those in Davis studio. Also, take photos during the review for posting. I plan to “open” the blog to everyone in the week following the review so lets be sure to get the notes and photos up by Tuesday’s class. Bring everything presented at the review to class Tuesday for group discussion. The only requirement will be to have a clear direction to take through the rest of the semester.

Don’t stress over the review, but do have a lot of work. See you tomorrow at 1pm. Please be ready to start so we don’t need to go deep into the night!

Good Luck!

Let me know what you think of this....basically showing the
architectural deconstruction, turning the "deconstruction"
of the human mind into something positive.....

A thought

Would I be asking for trouble if the Critics saw this image on one of my boards?

Homeless Facts

(This is a bit scary)

-Each year 100,000 New Yorkers experience homelessness.

-Each night, over 38,000 homeless individuals sleep in the New York City shelter system. This includes more than 16,000 children and 8,000 single adults. Thousands more sleep on city streets and in other public places.

-Nearly 1-in-20 New York City residents have experienced homelessness.

-There are over 1,000 soup kitchens & food pantries in NYC and 2,700 in NY State serving 2 million New Yorkers annually. They will serve 60 million meals this year to hungry men, women & children. Everyday they turn away over 2,500 people.

-In the first six months of 2001, requests for help in soup kitchens and food pantries citywide rose by 71%. After September 11th, there was another 71% increase.

-Families make up 78% of New York City's homeless shelter population.

-More than one-in-four children in NYC live in poverty. A typical homeless child is under 5 years old.

-Over half of homeless mothers in New York City have a history of domestic violence.

-Nearly one-in-five homeless parents were in foster care as a child.

-It is estimated that between 40% and 50% of homeless single adults residing in the municipal shelter system have a chronic mental illness.

-Approximately 90% of homeless New Yorkers are black or Latino, although only 53% percent of New York City's total population is black or Latino.

-Almost 17% of residents of the single adult shelter system are employed.
