Any comments being as everyone is seeing this for the first time now???
Printing is about to be underway, but last minute changes can always be made!

Nik - Scheme Development

I quickly made a model to place program and will now draw the plans and tweak it in drawings then create another model. The public circulation "resting" areas are clearly defined.

Schemes

In this scheme, it is the about the concept of the extruding the existing grid lines. The "stepping" would create multiple terraces for the doctors offices/administrators. The building would extrude over to connect to the gym.

This scheme is about wrapping around the site to create an enclosed courtyard. On the east side of the site there would be a bridging above the courtyard and that is where you would enter for the clinic.

This final scheme is about creating an atrium with a sunken gym. The gym would be halfway below ground and have a walkway that surrounds it. The bottom half on the gym is glass so it can be an open view to the public. The courtyard is a terraced down to the gym. The main building would have the same affect as the gym by having a a glass circulation path around a core. There would be program that connects both to the main building and gym but is above the the courtyard so that remain unaffected.

Re: [Amoia Cody Studio - NYIT Thesis - 2009-10] Matt- Updated Thesis Statement

Matt - The statement is better. I think it could use a final edit, but save that for later. It does a good job as is explaining the concepts and needs of and for the project. What's still unclear is how to do it. Concept - great. Program - great. Site - great. Process - not so great. I know it took a good deal of research and mental effort to get to this point, but you need to develop a group of schemes that really discuss the living and working aspects of the dwelling and production spaces and how they interact or not interact with the public spaces, in particular the market. Its a nice project, but it can fall flat without a serious effort to distill what is needed and what's not. I still believe this project is less about what to build, its really about what not to build.

Re: [Amoia Cody Studio - NYIT Thesis - 2009-10] Nik - Scheme Development

Nik - These look good. Much better than the wood sticks. I like the shaping of the circulation to make the "resting" places. Could you try a drawing that shows the solid and void relationship around these spaces (circulation) and places. Have you found an idea about how the circulation can be both literal and conceptual structure? This would make the idea much different from the Koolhaas circulation. Don't focus too much on it, but do give it some thought. Also, how does the model work with shadow? Take it outside and photograph it (or use a lamp if it remains overcast). Perhaps use the shadows as the next edit.

Matt- Updated Thesis Statement

New Farmer Development Program:

Over the past 3 decades, there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of farms within the tri-state region. Farms providing fresh produce are a necessity due to the ever increasing population growth. The effort to import crops from across the world to feed the population of NYC alone is a tremendous and expensive task. This cost and effort is an unnecessary factor that can be avoided through production of locally grown produce. At the same time, with the ever growing need for healthier food choices and the increase of immigrants entering into this country with an agricultural background and a need to earn an income, a solution to these problems are vital.

A response to these issues would be to develop a program that both creates new sources of locally grown produce but also provides an income for immigrant families looking for work in the agricultural field. The creation of the New Farmer Development Program satisfies these needs by identifying, educating, and providing disadvantaged immigrants with the tools necessary to become a regional farmer. By providing education, the NFDP ensures regional food security, preserves the economy of local farming communities, and increases the supply of high quality locally-grown produce.

The goal of this semester is to create a link between the urban and rural farmland by providing not only a space for the education of immigrant farmers but also the education of the general public about the benefits of sustainable agriculture in our society today. Interaction with the surrounding community is influenced by creating a marketplace where locally grown produce is sold. Therefore, the site chosen for the NFDP must relate not only to the community but also be in a geographical location where the transport of such goods must be feasible. The Haverstraw landfill became the ideal site because of its close proximity to NYC as well as easy access to the rural farmlands of the Hudson River Valley. A sustainable mindset is not only represented through the production of locally grown crops but also through the adaptive reuse of the landfill in order to give this wasted land back to the surrounding community.

Nik - Scheme Development

I used the public circulation to wrap around the building forming spaces in between as well as creating "resting" spaces for public access of the ramp. Next is to bring the circulation into the building at various points to create and define more elements.

Everyone

So,
The P-drive has been wiped out most likely by a new york tech classmate,
Just letting everyone know you should check your p-drives because half of it (atleast) was deleted, and if your folders are missing I am going to need to know inorder to let the IT guy know first thing in the AM so he can send a request through for a restore on those folders.

Reminder

Walk-Thru Board - (1) 30x40 board, vertically oriented, mounted on foam core. Include the name of project, location. Your name should be on a card taped to the back of the board.

PROPOSED SITE CONDITION

EXISTING SITE CONDITION

Schemes

This scheme is the most basic and less invasive of them. Using the existing building - where the clinic and administrators/doctors are located. Across the site is the gym. Located in the center would the focal point which would be the courtyard. Above would be program that connected the two programs - included in that would be the classrooms and conference rooms which could overlook the courtyard. Entrance for the Clinic would be on Broadway and for the Community center you would enter on North Main St.

The second scheme is using the existing column grid and setting up a larger grid that extends onto the site. Taking the existing building and somewhat chopping it up and moving forward and back to create a stepping effect and create possible terraces. Its also allows for the possibility to connect to the gym. The circulation is more interesting as it takes you through the site more. The section would be more visually interesting. Also, the courtyard would be in the center and the "stepping" would highlighted to show that.

The third scheme I went back and looked at my precedents for. I favor the Town Hall Building that Aalto design because he highlighted the central courtyard and I believe that is an important part of my program. For this last scheme, it involves a wrapping around the site and there is only one entrance into the site for both the clinic and the community center. There would be the gym and then the two "arms" on the opposite side of the site with one adjoining. On the second floor there would be a bridge that would be a holding a part of the program. Possibly the doctors office because it is the doctors that are "bridging" this connection of people helping people.

Comments are welcome. In the meantime, I am trying to think of more possibilities or enhancing these.

Site - Scheme Developement

Requirements for Final Review

Requirements for Final Review

1. Thesis statement. You must quickly explain the intent of your project. No more than 5 minutes!

2. Location Plan (regional plan) (local plan). Show all major landmarks and access.

3. Local Rules and Information i.e. zoning on one sheet of 8.5x11 paper.

4. Site Photos.

5. Site Plan with context. Show contours as applicable.

6. Site Section.

7. Program Description on one sheet of 8.5x11 paper.

8. Program Analysis – your ongoing studies, data charts, background info…

9. Program Diagrams.

10. Photos of Study models in sequence.

11. Photos of final study model.

12. All Plans and Sections at 1/16” scale (1/32” for Derek, Matt and Dennis) of chosen scheme. Remember these are concept drawings – not buildings – not floor plans – not construction drawings. These drawings are “pre-schematic”. They show what you “plan to do” for the next semester. This means they demonstrate in a candid way the following (in order of priority):

a. Scale: The depicted project scale is believable to the intended program and its site.

b. Concept: Concepts are clearly articulated by the way you chose to present your drawings. Do cad drawings on white bond paper capture the essence of your project or are they just documentations of boundaries?

c. Program: The major spaces are deployed in a meaningful way. Save the toilet and door locations for the end of next semester. (Dennis: save the building plans for later. Site plans and entry points are key)

d. Context: Depict context in the drawings. Scale? Material? Typology? All important. Where are the pedestrian paths – the vehicular paths?

e. Circulation: How and where do I enter your site and your concept? How does this relate to the context? To the idea. How do you intend to separate public and private zones?

f. Orientation: Identify north and demonstrate how it does influence your thoughts. Diagram the path of the sun and time of day.

13. Descriptive narration – an ideas “walkthrough” - Drawings. These drawings can be hand drawings, cad drawings, montage, collage, drawings on photos, materials, paste-up of precedent over your drawing… in other words any type of drawing that can be used to explain the formative ideas of your work.

14. Descriptive narration – an ideas “walkthrough” - Text. Spoken narrative discussing the project. This is critical to the Blog-Book idea (you can’t have a vocal narration in a printed book). The narration must be recorded prior to the final and posted to the blog (I have software for this). This can be made sitting by yourself (I don’t recommend this), with a colleague or recorded as a group in the studio. Try explaining your project to a non-architect and record their comments. If they get it – success! If not keep working on your explanations.

15. Presentation narration – Condense the recorded thoughts into a 5 minute spoken narrative. (5 min. Thesis Statement + 5 min. narration = 10 minute presentation! – remember the less you talk, the more time for response from the jury)

16. Sketches! Everyone must have sketches! – both 2d and 3d – both by hand and using computer.

The drawings and models must explain the ideas and intentions behind the project. You shouldn’t need to say much – the work and its organization is the explanation.

Remember, you have a whole semester to develop the architecture. This is a presentation for your “final” thesis proposal. All of your intentions must be documented and discussed. Nobody will critique your floor plans, but they will critique your visualization of concepts and whether they “fit” the chosen site and the thesis.

Bring in all of your stuff for final selection of presentation material and discussion of what’s needed to fill in the blanks. Formatting of the Board and Pin-Up materials should also be discussed. Have a mock-up of the board complete, but don’t let it consume you. The continuing work is much more important. Its also important to have fun! That said, everyone needs to work a bit more. Two weeks will go by really fast!

Program Breakdown-2

Thesis Statement - Updated

Composite Community Wellness Center

Throughout time, society has come across issues of poverty and crime. Some efforts have been made to correct the minds of the unfortunate however no valid attempts have been made to revitalize them into a positive aspect of our community. Persons to be accepted within the program regimen are homeless, substance abusers, recently released inmates, and the mentally unstable. The proposed goal is to find an acceptance into the program for each individual, and rehabilitate into society through a means of education and integration. The facility will use community as a therapeutic tool as a more holistic approach to rehabilitation. Through the use of existing conditions both in building structure and existing structure of life, the architecture will create a blur of the physical and metaphysical aspects of space and human interaction. In order to create this “ blur “ of conditions old and new complete site rehabilitation will provoke community interaction with program elements such as an Island Library, Amphitheatre as well as a public gallery. The aim of such an institution is to give those less fortunate the means to re-learn many things that members of community take for granted. In order to benefit its users, the building will be comprised of 3 major stages. These stages, Aggregation, rehabilitation and Imperforation will consist of 3 user types ranging from those bound to the confines of the site to those who are more transient. Major program elements are to include a welcoming center, medical/research facility, a school, community gallery and a distribution area where newcomers will be evaluated and placed in the most beneficial stage to suit their needs. The campus program elements will both react to the occupants of the space as well as the existing structure of the Renwick Smallpox Hospital seamlessly to create a healthy, successful environment for both the community as well as the clients. The proposed knitting of site and solution will draw the public through boundaries typically not crossed by community.

up-to-date thesis statement

Thesis

Creating a space that stimulates the human mind through more than just sight. Showing the importance of smell, touch and sound and how it affects productivity in learning and creativity. The impact of isolation on the human mind and body is a healthy treatment. People living in towns and cities are left with very few places to retreat and be at one with nature. The tranquil environment of an isolated area helps infuse the mind with silence and allows the human mind to think beyond its usual capacity. It leaves the person in perfect harmony with their surroundings. Unlike common work areas, a significant amount of research will be conducted outdoors to gain that sense of tranquility but will also have the option of working inside in a common laboratory area to get that human interaction that is also needed in the thought process. Kahn believes that art is seen through the eyes of the beholder and that certain people work better in certain atmospheres. Although we will give the scientists will be working indoors or out, the space inside will be an organic architectural structure. There will be an abundance of other outdoor elements brought inside to stimulate human senses indoors such as the sound of running water; for touch; plants and textures floors; smell; fresh flowers and sea breezes.
