Schemes

This scheme is the most basic and less invasive of them. Using the existing building - where the clinic and administrators/doctors are located. Across the site is the gym. Located in the center would the focal point which would be the courtyard. Above would be program that connected the two programs - included in that would be the classrooms and conference rooms which could overlook the courtyard. Entrance for the Clinic would be on Broadway and for the Community center you would enter on North Main St.

The second scheme is using the existing column grid and setting up a larger grid that extends onto the site. Taking the existing building and somewhat chopping it up and moving forward and back to create a stepping effect and create possible terraces. Its also allows for the possibility to connect to the gym. The circulation is more interesting as it takes you through the site more. The section would be more visually interesting. Also, the courtyard would be in the center and the "stepping" would highlighted to show that.

The third scheme I went back and looked at my precedents for. I favor the Town Hall Building that Aalto design because he highlighted the central courtyard and I believe that is an important part of my program. For this last scheme, it involves a wrapping around the site and there is only one entrance into the site for both the clinic and the community center. There would be the gym and then the two "arms" on the opposite side of the site with one adjoining. On the second floor there would be a bridge that would be a holding a part of the program. Possibly the doctors office because it is the doctors that are "bridging" this connection of people helping people.

Comments are welcome. In the meantime, I am trying to think of more possibilities or enhancing these.

  1. I think the idea of the two entries – one for the “clinic” and one for the community “wellness” or “help” center is a good one. The courtyard is difficult given the configuration of the site. Could this “courtyard” be indoor? How can the open space connect the major program spaces? How does the public enter and hang-out in this space. Should the gym be above grade? What about below grade? Halfway down or half way up?
