Review Notes

Steven

Retreat – need better name

Who go’s here?

Space for therapist vs. community

5 studios – define indoe and outdoor uses

How are administrators involved?

Community gathers where? Inside and outside. How is café used?

Site and Views – water / earth / sky

Better definition of location. Zoom in to map. 1-regional, 2-township, 3-local, 4-specific site. Have these maps defined using the same graphics and text. (THIS GOES FOR EVERYONE)

Site Sections (THIS GOES FOR EVERYONE)

Precedent for program (not necessarly buildings). Demonstrate analysis through comparing precedent with your program – describe the differences.

Private vs Collective – Group Council vs. Private Council. What’s the big idea? How does this fit into your scheme? Your program? Your site planning? Your analysis?

Lines of site – the schemes

upper level elevated – what program? sky

Ground level – base / structured – in ground / earth

-- retreat within the retreat – how does this work???

Community of structures vs. isolation of structures.

Derek

3 - Program components

Dormitory
Clinic
Rehab

3 – Levels of habitation

Homeless
Halfway House
Mental Clinic

3 – Stages of Collection / Correction / Rehabilitation

Free
Controlled
Closed

3 – Layers of Public Access (do each of the zones have 3 – layers)

Public Zone
Semi-Public Zone
Private Zone

Define public and private domains. How do the residents use the facility? Connect to the hospital? Interact with the public?

Why are they here in this place? Describe history of the island – of this place. Divine the characteristics.

Build a model that depicts the concept – the real and the idea. The existing ruin cannot be depicted as a solid – it’s a shell!

What is the rehabilitation of this structure and why is it needed in your project. What’s the reference – the reverence?

Dennis

Scale issues must be resolved. Size of program vs. site.

Site plan! Critical!! Don’t be concerned so much about the “building” but do be concerned about its placement! This is a planning project – the community is the plan. You are the planner – the architect.

Develop – the field of the whole site as the field of the project. Include buildings, roads, park, town center, fields, walkways…

Placement of the High School is important. Develop a few strategies for how the assembly of the site plan makes a community – a community of buildings (shapes) within a field (space) how does the activity inbeteen the buildings and fields make places?

How does the community center mark a new center in the field – how does it actively and conceptually and visually reach out to the community, the park, the town center and the two schools – New High School and Old High School

Find some precedent for this type of development – start with Aalto – bring to class for discussion.

Stacy

Fix site plan to show sunrise highway (look at the design 5 projects downstairs)

This is a free clinic and wellness education center? Need a clear concise name.

For this week: describe the integrated idea of the building the way you describe the integrated program. Go beyond the traditional way of thinking.

Is it a free plan? What are the spatial implications of the pay-it-forward system?

What are the layers of the public space? Describe this in a spatial narrative. Walk us through the space as each of the users. Describe the open free space and closed inactive space.

I come to the clinic I go … meet the administrator then leave with instructions. I come back, I go … through the administrator to who? The nurse?? Do I then go back out or to the doctors? Or to the learning center? Repeat this for the doctors and administrators. Am I an administrator??

Maybe make a series of 3-d coded movement diagrams that tell the story.

Reformat your program diagrams to fit with the now refined ideas and into the site (village – again see Design 5 studies).

Jen

Develop the edge between the park and building and between the street and the market.

Investigate the project out of the site to be sure the chosen site works.

Nik had some good comments – perhaps he can comment to this post – as should all.

How do you minimize the program, but still have enough to administer the central market.

Are their many of these markets? How does it extend into the community both literally and conceptually?

Question again this site.

Nik

Radical Transparency

Study public space inside private building.

Inversion of public space inside the private space. Investigation of open space in the private domain.

Not many notes other than try to set up the entry spaces as voids along the main public circulation path. Can this outdoor space be at many levels creating entry points at multiple datum points?

Compress your research onto one board – set up categories and graphics.

Brian

Why the private seclusion?

What does this site have to do with the program?

How does the public enter?

Labs are vertical – residences are horizontal.

Sustainability – site / program / flow

Think (make) the program inverted.

What’s in the labs – relate this to location. What’s at the water?

Matt

Need better name – sustainability is obvious.

Define the program of the New Farmers Development Program graphically.

Montage program parts into the site. Find images that relate program and site.

Describe program elements and the material that might be related.

What’s in the ground – on the ground – above the ground? How is this part of the idea?

Make inventory sheets (like the truck) for each of the program parts. Winery – Storage – Maintenance – Classrooms – Market.

What is accessible to the public? How does the placement of public spaces relate to the market?

Mid-Crit Board

Jenn- schematic idea 2

Looking at the change in heights in the surrounding community this idea is a possible way to express the differences. The markets are place in the center of the site with the park on the east and the three story enclosed space on the west side. In a sense creating a dividing line at the change over. The markets are on the first and second level connecting to one another but able to close up and be confined to its personal boundaries. The markets can possible be different sizes depending on what that individual culture needs. The park can also expand onto roof tops and move its way through the markets at certain times.

Jenn- schematic idea

The side on Junction blvd is extended by commercial spaces and opened up in the center to create an entrance off the main street into the market areas. Behind the commercial spaces are open park areas, a possible place where the market can extend out from its confined box during the day and fold back in at night. The community spaces wrap around the central markets creating a view of the main spaces at all times.

Jenn- Sketches

These sketches are exploring possible ways the market can connect on the site and even into the surrounding community.

Books

All,

Nik is the only one who started on the blog organization? In order for this "book" idea to work we need to see it and have it "appoved". Please set up your notes and links along with missing documentation ASAP.

Time will very quickly run out.

Nik - Site 2

The top one is my new site without my intervention. The bottom one shows how I would like to bring in the connection from the Urban setting. I chose this site because it is very unique. On one side you have urban-scape, on the other landscape, and to the north water-scape. I believe this site suites my needs more than the other.

Nik - Site Surroundings

Here is a zoom in on the Grand Harbor of Valletta, Malta. My sites are shown in green. This also shows the connection and location of the old forts that once protected Malta. I found out that this was a key place for ships to dock and refuel back in the day. Another thing is that because of the increase of water levels due to climate change, Malta is slowly sinking.

Nik - site

So my site is in the country of Malta. I choose this site since, on the map above, it is pretty much directly in the middle of the world (equal distance from America and China, as well as Europe and Africa).

Ed Hall

So Matt, Steve, and I were working at Ed Hall tonight when all of a sudden we were evacuated from the building because of a major gas leak. Ed Hall is closed until they fix it is what we were told by security. Just something to keep an eye on just in case its closed even on Tuesday.

Jenn- schematic model

Requirements for Tuesday’s review

Requirements for Tuesday’s review

1. Two complete study models of schemes with major spaces clearly articulated and placed in the site.

2. Site plan to an appropriate scale with dimensions and areas or a diagram showing the dimensions. The site plan must show context and a north arrow.

3. Outline schematic floor plans and sections. Minimum two plans – one must be at the entry level.

4. Sketches of concepts demonstrating your conceptual thought process.

5. Old models and drawings to help explain your process.

6. Program list on 8.5x11 with square footages also provide location of site and its size and limits.

7. Refined thesis statement.

8. Minimum three precedents that relate to your projects.

The drawings can be presented loosely – no need to spend time organizing boards. The primary reason for this review is to judge how clearly you articulate your projects and the thoughts and processes that got you to where you are now.
